Michael Martinez

Description

Sound description: Pacific Grove pianist Michael Martinez began playing the piano at the age of nine. By the age of 14, Martinez had a regular gig every Friday and Saturday as the house pianist for a local Italian restaurant. After becoming close with local pianist Jonathan Lee, who suffered from severe diabetes to the point that he could no longer play, Martinez played at Lee’s annual Lover's Point Piano concert in April 2004. That would be Lee’s last. He died less than one month after. Ever since, Martinez has carried on Lee’s tradition of the “Grand Piano Man” at the Big Sur Marathon, serenading marathon runners as they run past the nine-foot concert piano located atop a cliff at Bixby Creek Bridge.
