Bill and Anne Burleigh are hosting singer-songwriter Tracy Newman in their Big Sur home and inviting you to come listen in, according to Kiki Wow. “She’s hilarious!” writes Kiki. Newman’s writing credits back that up: She was a staff writer on NBC’s Cheers, co-wrote Ellen’s “coming out” sitcom episode, and co-created ABC’s According to Jim. RSVP at 235-7662.

James Bryant, co-proprietor of Carpe Diem Fine Books (245 Pearl St., Monterey, 643-2754), was elected to the Board of Governors of the 450-member Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America.

• If he’s not too busy for us all of a sudden, maybe James Bryant will be at St. Mary’s-by-the-Sea (146 12th St., Pacific Grove) 9am-2pm this Saturday for their Spring Book Sale, where they unload hundreds of books (and DVDs and CDs and oddities) on an unsuspecting public at Good Old Days. After 1pm, fill a grocery bag for $6.

• If you missed the concert of the kids of Matsiko World Orphans Choir last Saturday in Marina, they do an encore 7pm this Friday at Greater Victory Temple Church of God in Seaside (1620 Broadway Ave.).

• Go East, young woman. Arwa Awan of Pacific Grove High won first place in the 2013 California state finals of the Poetry Out Loud competition in Sacramento and will represent California in the national finals in DC this spring. She is the third local student to do so in the last four years.

Debbie Chin, executive director of the Carmel Bach Festival, is putting out the word about AB 580 in the State Assembly. It would raise Cali’s standing in arts funding from 49th in the nation (equivalent to 3 cents per person) to 12th ($2 per person). Go to www.cac.ca.gov and stay tuned.

Salinas United asks volunteers to come 9am Saturday (8am for continental breakfast) to clean four city parks: Closter Park at 401 Towt St., Central Park at 420 Central Ave., Natividad Creek Park at 1395 Nogal Dr., and El Dorado Park at 1655 El Dorado Way. Then all are invited to a celebration and fundraiser barbecue for homeless children at Closter Park.

National Steinbeck Center Executive Director Colleen Bailey is now also the Executive Director of YOSAL (Youth Orchestra of Salinas). How? Bailey’s predecessor set up a partnership between the two Salinas organizations to help YOSAL save money and increase resources. Further fortifying YOSAL’s health, Artistic Director Juan Felipe Molano, a leader in El Sistema (the program YOSAL is modeled after), is moving his family to Salinas this month.

Roger Ebert, who died last Thursday of cancer at age 70, is being given fond send-offs by family, friends, filmmakers, writers and movie critics all over the internet and print. Here’s one more: Thank you, Roger, for taking us to the movies, and with such an open heart. A public memorial takes place 7pm Thursday at the Chicago Theatre.
