In the beginning there was a Sacramento doctor named William Bronston and he spoke of many good things: universal health coverage for Californians, free mental health and long-term care, $5 prescriptions, preventive and dental care and surplus of $4.4 billion. He spoke with a sure eloquence, an almost mystical tone about the single-payer initiative he helped bring to fruition.
