A century ago this year, in Paris, the first building was erected for the sole purpose of showing moving pictures. It had only been two years since Louis and Auguste Lumiere presented the first exhibition of moving pictures in the basement salon of the Grand Cafe. Those early audiences who sat in the flickering light of those first movies couldn't possibly guess they were witnessing the birth of, perhaps, the most important cultural development of modern times.
