The word "development" sounds an alarm in the minds of many. But the Cannery Row Marketplace could revitalize a neglected part of the Row. What do folks really want?

What sort of development is appropriate for Cannery Row? Not tourism! The history is not in the shops or using the history to make money.
What kind of restrictions should local government be allowed to place on historic buildings? The government should save open space, a museum is fine; shops are just after the consumer''s dollar.
Is Cannery Row worth preserving? Yes, I think it has something people need. I want a little piece of history in Monterey.

What sort of development is appropriate for Cannery Row? Restaurants.

What sort of development is appropriate for Cannery Row? You people would be out of your mind to develop your waterfront. Leave the building and develop the rest as a historic space. Leave places to walk and see the water. Save open spaces for future generations.
Could this project boost tourism and help Cannery Row? You do need a historic building. The only place I saw [history of the canneries] was in the aquarium. There''s no place to walk out and see the waterfront.

What sort of development is appropriate for Cannery Row? More preservation and less commercial development is necessary.
What kind of restrictions should local government be allowed to place on historic buildings? That is a tough question. Local governments should work with the state to preserve areas of interest.
Could this project boost tourism and help Cannery Row? It would probably help it. If you develop parking lots, it could have a negative impact.

Do you think this is a historical building? What makes a building historic? Did Steinbeck or Twain do anything here? It doesn''t appear to be because it doesn''t have the aesthetics.
Should the [Stohan''s] building be moved? You''d compromise the foundation. You wouldn''t get any benefit from moving the building a few feet.
