It seems that a few bad eggs have spoiled the experimental omelette. Musician and KAZU DJ Ernesto Diaz-Infante, organizer of the year-old, twice-monthly experimental music and performance art series at Carmel's Martin LaBorde Gallery, reports that the gallery's New Orleans-based owner has cancelled the series and fired gallery manager Robert DeFord, the guy who gave permission for it.

It mystifies me when citizens have to go to the streets, the Rec Trail, the post office, and door-to-door to gather signatures of registered voters for initiatives, and form neighborhood ad hoc organizations to counter the actions of their elected officials.

A 4-foot-tall clay bust of Martin Luther King, Jr. is ready for bronze casting and installation at Marina's planned outdoor Sculpture Habitat on Imjin Road. Monterey Sculpture Center owner Larry Fischer, the force behind the Habitat, says Santa Cruz artist Barrington McLean has created "a heroic bust" of the slain civil rights leader, which will be cast in bronze at the center's foundry and installed in the sculpture park atop a 3-foot-tall black granite diamond-shaped pedestal. The artist is donating his work; Fischer is making the wax mold and installing the work for free; and Marina businessman Leonard Paige, owner of Paige's Security Services, is paying for the bronze casting. In keeping with the Habitat's educational goals, Fischer would like to set the bust in a reflecting pool with benches around it, where groups of visiting schoolchildren could sit to hear King's story. The sculpture could be ready for installation in as soon as ten weeks.

We should replace the World Trade Organization with a system that gives priority to humanity and the environment. The WTO institutionalizes the historical advantage of the North--specifically the USA--and threatens planetary well-being. But it's not the only problem with globalism ("Taking it to the Streets," 12/9).
Deli Treasures
Turkey and beef are house-roasted for the selection of deli sandwiches, featured along with New York pastrami and corned beef, a variety of cold cuts, and chicken, tuna, egg, and bay shrimp with dill and green onion salads. There's another dozen or so specialty sandwiches, like mesquite-grilled chicken breast, barbecue tri-tip, an Italian poor-boy, a veggie burger and meatloaf-like-mom-made. Eight-inch pizzas, like the popular chicken and pesto, are available hot out of the pizza oven, or ready to take home and bake. The macaroni and potato salads are all made on-site as is the cole slaw and the Chinese chicken salad. Soups like hot-and-sour, albondigas, and avgolemeno change daily and keep things interesting. And for dessert, a triple dip of Rocky Road is never a bad idea.
