There are 45 radio transmitters and 12 television transmitters with an array of ownership in the Monterey/ Salinas area. Below is a list of some of the bigger stations.
Recent legislation like the Telecommunications Act of 1996 has followed a trend of deregulation. Rather than foster competition, recent FCC rule changes have created advantages for the mega-media companies.
Broadcasters are regulated by the government because the airwaves are public property. In the Monterey/Salinas market, several big companies own multiple media outlets, as the following information illustrates.

Clear Channel Communications
A major media conglomerate based in San Antonio, with 1,200
radio stations and around 100 million listeners. Clear Channel
also owns several concert venues, such as the Fillmore and
Shoreline Amphitheatre.

A community radio station, owned and operated by Latinos, that
broadcasts music and news in Spanish and English with a focus
on young Latinos and farmworkers. On Sundays there are

Bilingue is based in Fresno and owns five stations in
California with 65 affiliates.

Under a special arrangement known as a Local Marketing
Agreement, Clear Channel “possesses certain rights with regard
to the station’s programming.” KCBA and Clear Channel-owned
KION share facilities in Salinas.

Hearst-Argyle Stations, Inc. Hearst Corp.
Hearst-Argyle owns 24 TV stations around the US and reaches
17.8 percent of households, according to the company. It in
turn is owned by the Hearst Corporation, publisher of 12
newspapers, including the San Francisco Chronicle as well as
several magazines such as Esquire and Cosmopolitan.
