While this follow up to keyboardist and producer Miles’ 2001 recording honoring Grover Washington Jr., To Grover With Love, has less compelling music, it is a more sincere tribute. Whether due to the live-in-the-studio recording process or the use of less studio magic, the result is an album that speaks with an easy grace. Instead of seeking to knock you over the head with his musicians’ technical prowess and speed, Miles creates serene soundscapes where the melodies comfortably and calmly flow.

Highlights include Dominick Farinacci’s trumpet on “Moonstreams.” It’s as lush a sound as ever recorded and the relaxed groove leaves the horn man room to stretch without having to sweat. Throughout the CD, four saxophonists try to channel Washington, but it’s handled best by Andy Snitzer. By choosing only the ideal notes, and leaving out all extemporaneous thought, Snitzer matches Miles’ laid-back musical vocabulary and captures Washington’s spirit perfectly.
