OK, I'll Stay

P.G. Police Chief Darius Engles withdraws resignation notice.

While Seaside's police chief and city manager lock horns, their counterparts in Pacific Grove are getting cuddly.

Three and a half months after submitting his resignation, which was to take effect in January, P.G. Police Chief Darius Engles has changed his mind – crediting the turnaround to new City Manager Thomas Frutchey.

"Per my City Manager's request and encouragement, I am withdrawing my resignation," Engles stated in a Nov. 30 press release. "I believe he will do everything in his power to support and provide the Police Department with the resources we need to serve the citizens of Pacific Grove."

In mid-August, Engles had cited the PGPD's shrinking police force and pending cuts as his motive for leaving, saying, "Future cuts at this time are just not what a chief needs."

But three weeks later, Frutchey stepped in as P.G.'s new city manager. The city had been operating under an interim CM since the 2008 resignation of former CM Jim Colangelo.
