Letters to the Editor for Jul 09, 2009

Editor’s Note: Thanks to all the online readers at www.montereycountyweekly.com, whose responses far outnumbered the snailmail this week. We got a particularly strong response to the “Local Heroes’’ cover package (July 2-8) on people in this community who’ve made a difference, and appreciate the fact that you honor their good deeds.

Love Bombs to Lisa Cisneros (“Reluctant hero does double duty for ag workers and LGBT community,” July 2-8)

Posted July 6-- What a wonderful article! Thank you for writing it, Jessica. Lisa is a truly special person with remarkable drive – a real legal and social justice powerhouse. And yet she is unbelievably humble, a fact which came through very well in this article. The combination of humility and dedication make her an inspiration to all, gay as well as straight. Lisa, thanks for all you’re doing! -Anis Salvessen

Celebrating Diversity (“Reluctant hero does double duty for ag workers and LGBT community,” July 2-8)

Posted July 3-- Great article, Lisa Cisneros is an inspiration to all people who believe in social justice… and not just believe but actively work aggressively to insure that some day this world will not judge people but will embrace them all and all our differences! Thank for writing this story that should be told over and over! -Roger Cazares

Working-class Hero (“Peace Resource Center leader combines wisdom, compassion and modesty,” July 2-8)

Posted July 6-- I want to compliment you on a wonderful article on Sylvia Shih. Nothing was exaggerated! She is very dedicated in the struggle for peace, justice, and equality for all people. Sylvia is a first-class hero! -Franklin Lambert

Reframing the Business (“John Wiseman saved businesses, helped old friends,” July 2-8)

Posted July 4-- It was the greatest pleasure working with John and Vicki Wiseman for 10 years. They both had taken care of their employees and customers. I know in my heart that they will pull through. I wish them the best of luck in this new adventure. -Mirna Martinez

Extra Credit (“NPS supercomputer saves lives, susses out trouble,” July 2-8)

Posted July 2-- Yes, hamming is a wonder in itself but I am highly disappointed that the article did not acknowledge Eric Adint as the designer, fabricator and facilitator who made hamming a reality. I have known Mr. Adint for almost two decades. He is a very capable but very humble person. I do believe though, he is deserving of a more in-depth public acclamation for his prowess. He is in fact hamming’s “father”! -John C. Weeks

Water Wars (“Are Cal Am’s proposals good for the county, or just Cal Am?” July 2-8)

Posted July 6-- Mr. Riley’s sobering assessment of Cal-Am’s not-so-stellar performance over the last decade or two makes me glad I live in Salinas! I’m also surprised to see so much attention given to potable water, the water fit for drinking, while so little is given to freshwater, which irrigates our crops, sustains much of our sport fishing industry, and supports the wildlife that enrich our California environment. Only a relatively small portion of our freshwater supplies are treated to become drinking water, while most of Monterey County’s economy is dependent on freshwater supplies, which almost exclusively come from groundwater. If you make the assumption that every one of Monterey County’s 432,000 residents needs about 1.25 acre feet per year for our irrigated agricultural economy to survive, then this county needs a sustainable annual groundwater supply of about 540,000 acre-feet to continue to prosper. -Bill Carrothers
