The Pacific Grove Police Department is investigating an early-morning fire as "suspicious," after finding an incendiary device at the scene, Lattitudes Restaurant at 631 Oceanview Blvd. The July 15 fire was contained to the roof and extinguished within 10 minutes of Monterey and Pebble Beach firefighters' arrival.
This is the fourth fire the Monterey Fire Department has responded to in recent weeks.
On July 13, Monterey police responded to an alarm at Creative Visions, located at 800 Lighthouse Ave., and found the building, which had been broken into, on fire. No one was injured in the fire, which was extinguished by the Monterey Fire Department, but it caused about $50,000 in damage to the business. Police are investigating it as possible arson.
Three days earlier, the Monterey Fire Department responded to a 2:45am call at 411 Alvarado Street. The Jugem Restaurant blaze that started in the basement and was not fully extinguished until 7am on July 10 destroyed the business, causing an estimated $1 million in damage to the building, which also housed the offices of Marotta Management. Firefighters did manage to save 12 of local icon Mike Marotta's accordions from his extensive collection. The cause is still under investigation.
And on July 7, Monterey firefighters responded to a two-story apartment complex fire at 498 Park St. Monterey just before 10pm. Damage to the building is estimated at $250,000. A preliminary investigation finds the fire to be accidental.
