It's official: The Seaside Police Officers Association has no confidence in City Manager Ray Corpuz.

As the Weekly first reported, the POA set the vote in motion at its Oct. 22 meeting, putting the question of confidence in Corpuz, Interim Police Chieve Steve Willis and Interim Deputy Executive Officer Don MacQuarrie to a union vote.

With ballots tallied this morning, the no confidence vote on Corpuz passed, according to POA President Nick Borges. The votes on Willis and MacQuarrie did not. Borges said he didn't know the numbers in favor and against.

“I think members felt that [Corpuz] was the root of what’s going on here.” Borges said. "In essence, it has to do with lack of leadership and some critical errors that were made in this rough time that we’re going through.”

The police department has been unsteady since five officers, including Chief Steve Cercone, were put on administrative leave without explanation. The department is also facing layoffs in the wake of a new study recommending fewer police positions in an effort to save the cash-strapped city money.

Corpuz responded to the vote in a press release: "While I wish they had given me an opportunity to address their concerns directly prior to filing a no-confidence vote, I am willing to work with the POA as we move forward. I remain focused on dealing with the issues impacting the citizens of the City of Seaside, including those related to the Police Department, and protecting employee rights."
