Sand City Mayor David Pendergrass wants to keep medical pot out of his city.

The Sand City Council will consider a temporary ban on medical marijuana at its Tuesday, November 17 meeting.

"I don't believe in medical marijuana," says Mayor David Pendergrass. "Marijuana is just dope to me."

Daniel Maniscalco, who wants to establish Monterey County's first medical marijuana dispensary, doesn't see it that way.

"I want to provide a service...for medical marijuana patients to get the medicine their doctors recommend."

Maniscalco says many county residents who would other debilitating pain get through the day with medical pot.  But some have to travel to Santa Cruz or to the Bay Area to get it.

The US Department of Justice recently announced that it would no longer prosecute medical marijuana users or sellers.  The move has many would-be cannabis entrepreneurs looking for places to set up shop, and cities around the state scrambling to either ban dispensaries or regulate them.
