Salinas slaying marks 25 homicides

A 27-year-old Salinas man became the city's 25th homicide victim early yesterday morning. Carlos Anthony Alfaro was walking to his apartment on the 700 block of Williams Road at 1am when, Salinas police say, at least one shooter unloaded several rounds into his face, chest and torso. Medics pronounced Alfaro dead at the scene.

Two other shootings struck Sunday morning. Less than an hour after Alfaro was killed, two males were shot at while sitting in their vehicle in front of East Alisal Street dance club La Movida. No one was injured. Police arrested three suspects for attempted murder.

A little after 9am, a 20-year-old man wearing a gray beanie and hooded sweatshirt shot several times at two people in a car parked on the 1000 block of Del Monte Avenue, police say. The car's owner told police he wasn't injured; the passenger fled the scene.

With Alfaro's slaying, Salinas ties last year's homicide record. All of this year's homicides have been linked to gangs.
