Divided Waters…The Peninsula water district directors flip-flopped on the regional water project agreements April 5, rescinding their earlier vote of support. Citizens for Public Water also came out the agreements, citing many of the concerns outlined by the Division of Ratepayer Advocates. The County Supervisors, meanwhile, were gung-ho in support April 6, voting 4-1 (with Jane Parker opposing) to sign on. Read more at www.mcweekly.com/rwp. [KA]
Styrofoam Sweep…Unincorporated Monterey County signalled support for a polysterene packaging ban April 6. (Because the grace period for restauranteurs was shortened from 1 year to 6 months, the language will come back to the Supervisors, likely as a consent agenda item.) Carmel Complaint…Mayoral candidate Adam Moniz accuses opponent Mayor Sue McCloud of violating election law by failing to report all of the expenses she incurred in March. He filed a complaint with the Fair Political Practices Commission, while McCloud has amended her campaign disclosure statement. [RU]
Lost and Found…Downtown Pacific Grove is filling up: Once dogged by empty storefronts, Lighthouse Avenue now has only one remaining commercial vacancy, according to Mayor Carmelita Garcia. New businesses include a nail spa, garden shop, baby store, vacation rental office, interior design store, French restaurant and coffeehouse. [KA]
Sodexho’s New Union…Cal State Monterey Bay cafeteria workers have joined local hotel union UNITEHERE Local 483, the union announced last week. The 50 Sodexho workers were formerly represented by Service Workers United. [ZS]
Monterey Mischief…A wave of weird and destructive vandalism hit Monterey the weekends of March 27-28 and April 3-4, according to citizen and police reports. Vandals carved the words “rat” and “pig” into the windshields of parked cars. No arrests have been made. [RU]
Assault and Battery…Salinas police arrested a 19-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man for battery on a police officer and other charges after an April 2 bar fight at Chapala Mexican Restaurant and Cantina in Salinas. The next night, a 41-year-old was punched after leaving the bar, police said. [ZS]
