School Suit…A lawsuit filed in Alameda County Superior Court could bring relief to cash-strapped local schools. The Campaign for Quality Education contends the state’s school finance system violates the state constitution by failing to provide all kids with an equal education. [RU]

 

Bruce is Loose…After some waffling, Marina Mayor Bruce Delgado announced he’s running for re-election, pitting him against Councilman Dave McCall. City Planning Commissioner David Burnett, a Delgado ally, is running for one of two open council seats, as is former councilwoman Nancy Amadeo, a Delgado critic. [MCA]

 

Calling All Pols…Aspiring Monterey city leaders can request nomination papers for mayor and city council starting this week. Mayor Chuck Della Sala’s term ends in November, as do the City Council stints of Nancy Selfridge and Frank Sollecito. [RU]

 

Big Dogs…Los Lobos will play Sand City’s West End Celebration Aug. 22, marking the city’s 50th anniversary and the festival’s eighth year. The triple-Grammy-winning Chicano rockers follow Aug. 20-21 performances by White Album Ensemble, Persephone’s Bees, Sambada, Forrest Day and others. The celebration benefits the Guitars Not Guns program. [WR]

Sewage Spill…Thousands of gallons of sewage spilled onto Pacific Avenue in Monterey July 8, closing Monterey Municipal Beach. The beach was re-opened, but as of July 13 the county health department recommends against swimming there because of unsafe levels of bacteria. [RU]

Take A Bow… Joan McCleary, Pacific Grove Art Center's executive director for nearly eight years, tendered her resignation last month and will step down Dec. 31. McCleary was going to resign last year, but stayed on when her friend Johnny Aliotti became the PGAC board president. The center’s next art opening is July 23. [WR]

Taxi!..The Monterey City Council voted July 6 to join a region-wide Joint Powers Authority to regulate taxi service. The action ends Yellow Cab’s corner on the city’s taxi market, but cabbies say it could drive them out of business because of higher fees. [RU]
