Ms. Chief…Seaside Police Department has a new chief—and she’s a lady. Vicki L.H. Myers will begin leading the SSPD Dec. 13, according to city officials, replacing the second interim chief since last year’s ouster of former Chief Steve Cercone. [KA]

 

Seaside Homicide…The nephew of former Seaside Councilman Darryl Choates, 26-year-old Dwayne Choates, Jr., was killed on the 1500 block of Seaside's Yosemite Street Nov. 10. Green Steam...Salinas’ own eco-friendly carmakers announce they’ve picked a domestic battery maker for their clean three-wheeler, the Triac; long-delayed production is set to begin. Leyden Energy says it makes a relatively lightweight power pack that will allow the Triac a range of 100 miles. [RU]

 

Fast Pace for Peace… From about 10am-noon on Nov. 13—as runners crowded into Monterey for the Big Sur Half Marathonpeace activists demonstrated on Window-on-the-Bay Park, calling on President Obama to end the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. [KA]

“Seaweed Lady” Passes…Dr. Isabella Abbott, a former Hopkins Marine Station algae taxonomist who left an indelible mark on Monterey Bay's marine science community, died on Oct. 28 at 91. In 1972 she became the first female and first minority full professor at Stanford University's biology department. [KA]
