Barack Blitz…The Prez gets a double dose of Seaside love this week. The Obama Way street sign unveiling happens Wednesday, Sept. 15, 4-7pm, City Center, Fremont Boulevard and Obama Way (Broadway Avenue). The volunteer-powered Obama Way Community Garden breaks ground Saturday, Sept. 11, 11am, Lowell Street and Broadway. [KA]

 

Miller Gets A Boost…Former Monterey County Sheriff hopeful Fred Garcia is now backing Scott Miller in his faceoff against incumbent Sheriff Mike Kanalakis on the November ballot. [JJB]

 

Weed Whacked…The Pacific Grove City Council voted 5-2 to ban medical marijuana facilities Sept. 1, with Robert Huitt and Lisa Bennett in the minority. A groundwell of public opposition reversed the council’s formerly pro-pot leanings. [RU]

 

Operation Butterfly…At the same meeting, the P.G. Council adopted a citizen strategy for luring butterflies back to the P.G. Monarch Grove Sanctuary. The city will match private donations to add boxed trees to the sanctuary, in an effort to buffer wind before the October start of monarch overwintering. [KA]

 

Labor Looks AheadAfter a tough year of layoffs and other job losses, Monterey’s Central Labor Council head Cesar Lara vows to help put a Dem in the governor’s chair and lobby the county supes for pro-worker policies. [RU]

 

Brainy Waves…An independent state audit has found few problems with SmartMeters, the wireless gas and electric meter upgrades Pacific Gas & Electric and other utilities are installing statewide. But citizens continue to ask questions as Monterey County installations begin. [KA]

 

Brown Broadcast...Labor Day has come and gone, which means the race for Golden State governor is ramping up. While Republican candidate Meg Whitman has sponsored TV ads since June, Democrat Jerry Brown’s first airs statewide this week. [JJB]
