On the morning of Sept. 28, 17-year old Ulises Jacobo was shot and killed in broad daylight near the intersection of Del Monte Avenue and Towt Street in Salinas. Police received an emergency call about the shooting at 8:18 am.
According to witness reports to the police, Jacobo and another male were walking down Del Monte when a gunman approached and fired several shots at Jacobo. Afterwards, Jacobo's companion fled, and the suspect was seen getting into a dark colored 4-door Honda Accord. Witnesses described the suspect to the police as a thin Hispanic male, around 20 years old, and 5'5 to 5'8" tall.
Police have classified the crime as gang related.
Officer Lalo Villegas, the department's spokesman, says the police are hoping witnesses who saw the shooting will share information with the police. "Del Monte is one of heaviest travled thoroughfares," says Villegas. "We know at that time there is a substantial number of people out."
Villegas said the police are still looking for the victim's companion who fled the scene before police arrived. "We feel he is a victim of the shooting," Villegas says, "He is a key witness."
Those with information can call the Salinas Police Department Detective Division at (831) 758-7226 or Detective Jeff Lofton at (831) 758-7124. Anonymous tipsters can call the Salinas Police Department Anonymous Tip Line at 831-775-4222, or the We-Tip Line at 1-800-78-CRIME, or text information to the Text Tip Line with the code "SPD831" to "847411."
Villegas says the We-Tip line rewards anonymous tipsters up to $1000 if their tip leads to an arrest. Callers will get a code number and can check back in a couple weeks to find out if they are eligible for a reward.
