Follow-up: What do the California missions represent to you?
RICK TYSON | Artisan | Cachagua
A: Spirituality is more crucial. Religion is divisive by nature.
Bad Teacher: In the Carmel mission there is a painting that illustrates it. Serra is blessing a Native American. Serra looks 7 feet tall, while the native looks subservient.
ERNST VAN EEGHEN | Marketing Director | Amsterdam, Holland
A: There is too little religion. American society is based on Christian values and kids need to learn that at a young age. It’s important for kids to grow up with values.
Moment of Zen: To me they are home. I want to visit all of them.
DARCIE LINDNER | Bartender | Sacramento
A: The U.S. is a religious country, but it’s so diverse that you don’t want to be too blatant or proud of your specific religion. .
Flagellation: A violent change in California history. Abuse of the natives at the hands of the Catholic church – disease, rape.
