When guitarist Andrew Dolan was a kid, the music that appealed to him came from surf movies. The soundtracks from stuff like The Good Times and Momentum, carried by ’90s punk rockers like Pennywise and Strung Out, seemed to reach Dolan more than anything else. 


But when the 29-year-old Moss Landing lifer was 18, his dad – who he’s only seen a couple times – paid him a visit and changed Dolan’s musical tastes.


“The first thing [my dad] asked me is if I had a guitar,” he says. “He started playing some old folky stuff and after that I knew I had to find more stuff like that. That day was very important for me.”


Some of the tunes Dolan’s father plucked out included Jerry Jeff Walker’s “Mr. Bojangles” and Willie Nelson songs.


Nearly a decade later Dolan and The Good Sams, playing Friday at Pierce Ranch Tasting Room, came together. 


The quintet – featuring Dolan on vocals and guitar, Sunshine Jackson on vocals and washboard, Corey Helgeson on stand-up bass, George Brooks on vocals and guitar and Tricia Muren on fiddle – has crafted a sound that meshes everything from punk and surf to country blues and jugband. But Dolan says the backbone of the band is definitely old-time roots Americana.


On the eight-bar, traditional tune, “Trouble in Mind,” Jackson brings a feminine touch to the 1920s blues classic while keeping its soul intact.


Meanwhile, on a Dolan original, “Supermarket Fantasy,” the band channels Woody Guthrie and a good old fashioned hoedown in a barn.


Dolan hasn’t seen pops since that last meeting. But the sounds that came out of it will resonate around here, and beyond, for a long time.
