We’ve all heard the saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” A lesser known derivative: “If it’s damn delicious, don’t fix it either.” Both apply here, where the Grotto hails itself as originator of the garlicky, buttery “Monterey-style” clam chowder they’ve been ladling since the early 1950s. Many wharf restaurants now peddle their iterations of this classic, and while some are done well, none makes us happier with its clams.
