There are not a lot of serious contenders on the block for this title, but the few that exist are heavyweights. So it’s a sweet victory that Weston is imprinted uppermost in the minds of those who know. Maybe it’s the legacy of the Weston name that propels the votes. But that’s only the prominent surface of this place, which houses 19th century photographic works by Carleton Watkins, Julia Margaret Cameron and Roger Fenton; 20th century works by Ansel Adams, Yousuf Karsh, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Marion Post Wolcott; and contemporary standouts like Rod Dresser, Roman Loranc, Chip Hooper, Jeffrey Becom and Ryuijie. Fine art photography, in light of the millions of amateur hands snapping indiscriminately onto memory cards, shines with glory.
