Pitchfork Gives Mucho Love to Monterey County

The online hipster and sometimes overly esoteric music website, Pitchfork, has made a tradition of inviting respected indie artists to contribute to a monster "Best of" list in the days leading up to the new year. And this year's collection features a few shoutouts to Monterey County.

Gang Gang Dance's Brian DeGraw (Top Ten Things) 3. Prince Rama in Big Sur: This was probably my favorite live show of the year. We did a month long tour with this amazing band and the Big Sur show was one of many highlights for me. The energy in the room that night was so so heavy and the moon was full and the Rama girls had a bunch of their family members there at the show and they were all dancing so hard at the front of the stage. Serious Magic. I think any instance where you get to see the mother of the performers losing her shit in the front row is extremely special. Oh, and they had the legendary Tim Koh on bass, which is always always A +++.

Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer (Top Ten Things) 3. Seeing mind frying San Fransisco trio Sean Smith and the Present Moment live.

Woods' Kevin Morby (Top Ten Things) 8. Thee Oh Sees at Woodsist Fest in Big Sur.

So, I guess there is some good stuff going on here. Can't wait to see what next year brings.

It would be nice if the local media also gave some love to the are shows. Godspeed You Black Emperor announced a show at Big Sur, and there has not been a single mention about it locally. Definitely a must see show and tickets sold out fast, but not good enough for the Monterey press apparently.
