The Nacarubi Mission Statement says it all: This party is by the people for the people of Big Sur & the peninsula, and our friends beyond from all over the place. We are in support of the spirit that made Big Sur wild and wonderful in the 1st place, not the forces that exploit it. We want to have a ball. We want to dig quality art & music. We want to share a whole weekend together. Drive the extra mile…Smile the extra smile.
The two-day music festival, located on one of the oldest homestead ranches (Withrow Family) on Big Sur's south coast, isn't the easiest spot to get to (see video below) but it's definitely one of the most beautiful, which is why year after year the event continues to draw music fans, bands and DJs from all over.
This year's lineup—featuring more than 20 acts including local faves Matt Baldwin, Rushad Eggleston, BiG SuRCuS, Nico Georis, DJ Hanif Wondir—brings a mash-up of electronica, bluegrass, folk, rock and an undiscovered country and western swing legend. Larry Hosford has been doing his thing for five decades now. In the 70s, his music was picked up by Shelter Records and recordings were made with Leon Russell and George Harrison playing back up. But somehow this little-known gem never achieved stardom and has been quietly continuing to write music unnoticed in his hometown of Salinas. When Adam Zerbe (4th Street Records) discovered Hosford it was as if he found a Babe Ruth rookie card under his couch cushion. The Carmel musician-producer brought Hosford and his band—Charlie Wallace on Pedal Steel, Willy Bryant on lead guitar, Jerry Bradley on bass, Mike Pupo on drums and Harpin’ Johnny on harmonica—to his Pepper Tree Studio in Carmel Valley to lay down 16 of his greatest unreleased tunes, which will be available for the first time at Nacarubi.
Some of the other stellar acts making the long journey include Magic Trick (featuring Tim Cohen of The Fresh & Onlys), L.A. sound throwbacks Allah-Las, the lo-fi pop of Magic Leaves, the raucous noise-funk of The Angus Scrimm and the surf-folk harmonies of The Range of Light Wilderness.
