After a month of headaches and long commutes the Big Sur community is once again linked to the Monterey Peninsula via Highway 1. The highway has been closed since March 17, when a 40-foot section of the northbound lane fell into the ocean.
Wednesday afternoon Caltrans opened a temporary one-lane section of the highway near Rocky Creek with no weight or length restrictions. The one-way reversing traffic is controlled with signals in both directions with road work ongoing to further stabilize the hillside and restore the roadway to two lanes.
Although the opening of the highway to northbound Big Sur commuters is a sigh of relief, the Alder Creek slide south of Nacimiento-Fergusson has Highway 1 closed for at least another month according to Caltrans.
