Monterey has finally gotten its first food pantry not connected with a church.
Hope Center Food Pantry, a beneficiary of the Weekly's Monterey County Gives! campaign, now distributes groceries, produce, toiletries, baby food and pet food from its new digs at 1271 10th St., Monterey.
The nonprofit distributes goods to Monterey County residents in need on the first and third Thursday of every month from 4-5pm. The next distribution is Thursday, Aug. 4, 4-5pm.
"Founded in 2010 by an all-volunteer board of moms and local students, [Hope Center staff] have worked diligently to serve over 1,800 people and 488 pets," the press release states. "With support from the community, The Monterey County Food Bank and Ag Against Hunger, it is their goal to end hunger in Monterey County."
