Falling Tree Kills Condor Biologist in Big Sur

Mike Tyner, field supervisor for Ventana Wildlife Society's California Condor Recovery Program, was killed by a falling tree in Big Sur on Wednesday, VWS announced in an email tonight.

"Tragically, during high winds that we received in Big Sur on Nov. 30, a tree toppled causing his death," read an email from VWS Executive Director Kelly Sorenson and his staff. "This loss is catastrophic, heartbreaking, and painful. As our staff mourns the passing of a remarkable friend, our hearts go out to his family."

"Mike will be dearly missed by all who knew him and his positive impacts on Big Sur's natural beauty will live on through the condors," stated Joe Burnett, VWS Condor Project coordinator and a close friend of Tyner's. "I'm almost sure he's up there soaring with them now."
