Gay Officer Reinstated to Navy

Monterey's own Jason Daniels, formerly known as Jason Knight, has been reinstated in the U.S. Navy four years after he was discharged (for the second time) for being openly gay.

Daniels previously studied Hebrew at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, and is now enrolled to begin Farsi classes there in the spring.

He's also a leader of the local LGBT community and was active in pushing for the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy that barred openly gay troops from the U.S. military. He and two other discharged officers sued the U.S. Navy in federal court, seeking reinstatement, but the lawsuit was scrapped after the feds repealed DADT in September.

Daniels wrote an op-ed for the Weekly on his fight for fairness in May 2010. He also spoke with the Weekly last January about his commitment to serving the country.
