The city of Salinas has hired Seaside City Manager Ray Corpuz as its own city manager.
Sources say the City Council was bitterly split over the decision. Vouching for Corpuz were Mayor Dennis Donohue and councilmembers Steve McShane, Gloria De La Rosa and Sergio Sanchez; councilmembers Jyl Lutes, Kimbley Craig and Tony Barrerra pushed for Salinas interim city manager Jim Pia.
Someone in the city's top brass reportedly leaked news of Corpuz's candidacy to the press earlier last month.
Corpuz, who has been the Seaside boss since 2005, begins in Salinas Feb. 1 at a base salary of $215,000 per year, with concessions.
