The city of Seaside announced that it is taking the first steps toward implementing a public improvement plan for West Broadway to be completed by the end of 2012.
The plan for the West Broadway Urban Village includes streetscape and intersection modifications along Broadway between Fremont and Del Monte Boulevards, new pedestrian- and bicyclist-friendly features, and the upgrade of some public utilities.
The changes are guided by a plan to make the commercial area into “the core of a new pedestrian and bicycle friendly, transit-oriented urban village,” according to a statement issued by the city. There are also future plans to integrate the area with the Transportation Agency of Monterey County’s plans to build a light rail station in Seaside.
In November, the city selected ROMA Design Group to prepare the design and engineering for the project. The firm specializes in designing public spaces.
The project will be funded by a federal grant from the Economic Development Administration and a matching local Community Development Block Grant award.
