Auto Lift Accident in Seaside Kills Mechanic

A Seaside mechanic injured May 27 when the car he was working on slipped off a lift and hit him died from his injuries.

Mechanic Laurent Thisquen died later on the day of the accident while in surgery at Santa Clara Valley Regional Medical Center, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

Thisquen, 43, was working on a Mercedes SUV at the Honest Engines auto shop on Fremont Street when the car fell from the lift. He suffered a severely broken left leg and head and internal injuries, according to Seaside Fire Capt. Troy Leist. Thisquen was transported by ambulance to the Monterey Peninsula Airport and then airlifted by Calstar air ambulance services to Santa Clara Valley Regional Medical Center for further treatment and evaluation.

The accident happened around 11:35am. The front left tire of the car prevented the vehicle from fully crushing the mechanic, and he wasn’t trapped under the car.

“His blood pressure was low when he left the scene,” Leist said following the accident last Friday. “We have no way of knowing what other injuries he sustained, but he wasn’t doing too good.”

Thisquen is survived by a wife and young child. Services in San Jose are pending.

Sadly my friend and long time co-worker did not survive the injuries sustained as a result of this tragic accident. He was a consummate professional and all-around good guy. You will be missed by many bro.

Larry was my brother and friend- he worked on cars for years and was damn good at it. I wonder at the safety policies of Honest automotive; my brother shouldn't have died doing automotive work. My niece and nephew are now deprived of a loving father which they adored, and nothing can replace that, ever. I hope that the owner of this shop takes into account his practices and makes changes that makes his employees safer in his work environment.

We remember him always, his family and friends.
