After almost two months of work on a rock slide that struck Highway 1 at Alder Creek some 40 miles south of Carmel, Caltrans announced the road will re-open by Friday, June 10.
The news comes just weeks after officials reported the road might not be cleared until late June as more material kept sliding from higher up on the steep mountainside. Caltrans thanked Windsor Construction personally for their efforts in getting the job done.
The news couldn’t come soon enough to residents and business owners of Big Sur. Tourism is a mainstay of the area and with up to 100 travelers turned around every day at the slide as they headed north on Highway 1, the tills have been noticeably lighter than normal for this time of year.
