ASPCA Accused of Pulling the Wool

“Humane societies and SPCAs throughout the country” are suffering—thanks to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ high-profile commercials featuring Sarah McLachlan and Dan Aykroyd—according to the State Humane Association of California. In response to the ASPCA’s confusing fundraising campaign, SHAC has filed a complaint with the Office of the Attorney General against them, alleging deceptive fundraising practices that capitalize on donors misconceptions about the financial link between the ASPCA and local SPCAs. “Our member humane societies and SPCAs frequently report hearing from people who gave to the ASPCA believing they were giving to their local shelter. These shelters believe they are missing out on funds that were intended for them,” Erica Gaudet Hughes, Executive Director of the State Humane Association of California says. In 2010 California received $352,100 from the ASPCA, despite the non-profit receiving some $116.5 million in 2009. The situation becomes more absurd when considering the ASPCA operates only one animal shelter in the country, located in New York City. SHAC says they do not want to detract from the work ASPCA does, however they say the profiting by way of deliberate confusion must cease.
