Salinas Growers Take the Helm of the Western Growers Association

The agricultural trade association representing 90 percent of the fruits, nuts and vegetables grown in California today announced new leadership on its board with a good showing—fully half of the executive committee—for Salinas.

Mike Jarrard, president of Mann Packing, will serve as the new chairman of Irvine-based Western Growers (he was previously vice chair). Meanwhile, Bruce Taylor, president of Taylor Farms, became one of the executive committee's new members and will serve as vice chair. John Manfre of Frank Capurro & Son, based in Moss Landing, is treasurer.

All told, Monterey County growers hold more than 15 percent of seats on the board of directors. "Salinas is the salad bowl of the nation, and Monterey is a large production area," explains Wendy Fink-Weber, spokesperson for Western Growers. The $4 billion Monterey County industry is the fourth largest, by county, in the state.
