Quail Lodge Announces Re-opening

Quail Lodge, a Carmel Valley based luxury hotel, announced at a press conference today that it will reopen the lodging services in April 2013 after constructing a fresher and friendlier look. A spokesperson also announced the resorts new name, drum roll please...’The Quail Lodge and Golf Club’.

The hotel and facility had been running up a deficit, says Sir Michael Kadoorie, chairman of Hong Kong Shanghai Hotel Limited-owner of Quail Lodge among other luxury hotels worldwide. “Being a publicly quoted company, we had little choice but to close the hotel portion of the resort,” he says. The hotel closed in November 2009, however the rest of the facility remained open for members to use, including the golf course and clubhouse, he adds.

The company is going to carry out a large scale makeover-invest $28 million into hotel renovations and fix the golf course -in the hope to turn around Quail’s losing streak, says Kadoorie.

One of the planned features that has got Kadoorie jazzed is a car storage service-so that routine visitors can store their car year round-and maybe even keep a bottle of their favorite California wine in there too, he says.

The overall look they are going for: California ranch house influenced by Spanish colonial style, says Robert Barry owner of Barry Design Associates, the architectural firm designing the hotel. “There won’t be a formal hotel front desk,” he says “But we added fire pits inside and out.”

In an interview, Elizabeth Vitarisi Suro, managing director for the Carmel Valley Chamber of Commerce, says that Quail Lodge has been missed since its closure. Quail lodge has been fixture in the community for so many years, she says, “It is the branding of Carmel Valley.” The reopening of the hotel is good news to her, she says,“It will bring back the jobs that were lost and revitalize the local economy.”
