Former Penn State President Graham Spanier was charged Thursday with helping to cover up allegations of child abuse against former football coach Jerry Sandusky.

He's facing five charges for perjury, obstruction of justice, endangering the welfare of children, criminal conspiracy and failure to report suspected child abuse, according to media reports.

As the cover-up scandal emerged last year, the Secretary of the Navy asked Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta to remove Spanier from the board of the Naval Postgraduate School. Spanier resigned from the NPS board just days after stepping down from his post at Penn State.

Sandusky was sentenced last month to 30 to 60 years in prison, which he began serving at Greene State Prison in Pennsylvania. He was convicted on 45 criminal counts for sexual abuse of 10 boys over a 15-year period.
