The Fort Ord Reuse Authority, which had been slated to sunset in 2014, will be extended for six more years.
Under Assembly Bill 1614, authored by Bill Monning, D-Carmel, FORA's new sunset date is June 30, 2020. The bill also requires the FORA board prepare a dissolution plan before that date.
FORA's spending and Base Reuse Plan have recently come under fire by local groups such as Fort Ord Recreation Users and Keep Fort Ord Wild, which opposed the FORA extension. Sierra Club's Ventana Chapter representatives praised the extension, as it allows a settlement agreement between the two to remain enforceable.
"Sierra Club has worked proactively with FORA, and we conclude that our goals would be best attained through FORA," attorney Jane Haines said in a statement.
The Legislature passed the bill in August. Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB 1614 Saturday.
