Monterey High student arrested for alleged threats

Monterey police arrested a Monterey High School student this morning for allegedly making threats to other students through social media.

The male student was arrested on the way to school, and a search warrant was served at a Seaside residence, says Monterey Police Department Lieutenant Leslie Sonné.

Following an investigation, the juvenile was released without charges. No weapons were discovered in the search, Sonné says.

The case will be forwarded to the Juvenile Probation Department for their review.

Threats were allegedly made through text message, though police are still investigating whether other social media was also used.

“This case serves as an important example of the need to contact law enforcement when worrisome statements about the health and safety of others become known,” says Sonné.

She adds, “In this environment nationally we felt it was very important to look into this immediately and intervene, and that’s what we did.”
